“The task of seismology is to study the interior of the Earth, picking up from where geologists have left off. Modern seismographs are like spyglasses, allowing us to examine the greatest of depths.”
– Dr Andrija Mohorovičić
Dr Andrija Mohorovičić is one of Croatia’s greatest scientists. His contribution to the field of seismology made him world-famous. Today he is considered one of the founders of modern seismology.
He was born on 23 January 1857 in Volosko. His parents were Andrija and Marija (née Poščić).
In 1909, Dr Andrija Mohorovičić discovered the boundary surface between the Earth’s crust and its mantle. Studying earthquakes, he found that at a depth of about 50 km there is a distinct increase in the velocity of seismological waves and a sudden and significant change in the structure of rocks.
This is the most important scientific discovery ever made in Croatia, the one which had the greatest reverberations in the international scientific community, and the most significant one to have ever been published in a Croatian journal. This boundary is today internationally known as the Mohorovičić discontinuity or Moho.
The Dr Andrija Mohorovičić Interpretation Centre in Volosko near Opatija will bring together tourism, scientific and cultural stakeholders, organisations and associations. At the same time, it is aimed at children, young people, visitors, tourists and passers-by to provide them with a contextualisation and understanding of the historical facts related to the birthplace of the scientist Andrija Mohorovičić.
