Lungomare

You don’t really know Opatija if you haven’t taken a walk along its historic Franz Joseph I coastal promenade – the Lungomare.

Gently meandering along the coastline where the healthy spray of the murmuring sea spreads in the air, this trail takes you back to the times when emperors, kings, Nobel laureates and artists used to walk here. Built in stages from 1888 to 1911, the Lungomare connects Volosko and Lovran at a length of almost ten kilometres. Ever since, the Lungomare has been a favourite walking path for local people and their visitors, a motif of countless photographs and paintings, and an essential part of Opatija’s townscape when viewed from the sea.
